If you are in the market to select and purchase a new cordless vacuum cleaner, you know that there are many different types of specifications that characterize different models. Sometimes these specifications can be confusing. Most people will think that cleaning ability of the vacuum cleaner has to do with the power or the suction. That is partly true, though it is also about several other characteristics, such as the watts and the volts drawn from and to the vacuum cleaner. These elements will also help to determine the vacuum’s cleaning ability.
Watts and Wattage
Wattage is referred to as the power that is pushed into the vacuum motor. The vacuum motor needs energy to run. The energy is referred to as watts or wattage. This specification does not consider efficiency and effectiveness of the motor. It does not care how many fans used by the cordless vacuum and it does not care about vacuum cleaner design or the motor wattage.
Some vacuum cleaner brands will only give you a rating for amperage. If this is the case, you can convert the amperage into watts through the following formula:
- Amps X 120 = Watts (the 120 represents the number of volts; it is always 120)
The best type of comparison you can do between the different cordless vacuums is to compare the motor input power in watts or compare the full machine rating in watts.
Volts and Voltage
The standard current in a household is usually 120 volts. This applies to United States households. Different countries have different voltage standards. All appliances such as cordless vacuums are designed to operate from 110 and 120 volts.
