Step 1 – What it Entails
It is important to know what exactly you need to do when it comes to refacing your cabinets. Knowing what to expect will help to make the job a lot easier in the long run. You will find that what it all comes down to is replacing your draw fronts and putting new doors on the cabinets. You will also need to have the face frames resurfaced and get end panels that will match it. Whenever you reface your cabinets yourself, you will be able to save thousands of dollars.
Step 2 – Prepare
Once you have prepared yourself mentally for the task at hand, you are ready to move on to preparing the kitchen for the task at hand. You will begin by getting all of the existing doors taken off. This also goes for the draw fronts. Make sure that you also get the moldings taken off as well. You will need to use the proper screwdriver to loosen the hinges until the doors and fronts come off. You may need a step ladder for the cabinets.
Step 3 – Sand
Once you have the doors and the fronts taken off, you are now ready to sand the end panels and the face frames. You will also need to get the end panels sanded as well. You do not want to sand them down too much, just enough where they are smooth and like new again.
Step 4 – Replace or Modify
If the doors are not to your liking, then you may need to completely replace them. You can also modify them if you feel that they are salvageable. Make sure that you stay true to your cottage them and do not attempt to mix and match, as this will take away from the cottage vision that you are trying to create. Keep things simple and modest.
Step 5 – Finish Up
You are now ready to get your new drawers installed with the new joints and any necessary roller glides. Make sure that you get any new doors or drawer fronts installed as well. Once you have done this, you can finish up as you see fit. You can paint the area or leave it as is, whatever suits your cottage style kitchen dreams the best.
