Creating a Marble-like Effect with Concrete Coatings
Concrete coatings are a must to decorate or protect concrete surfaces like floors or walls. Hiring an expert will cost a fortune, but you can achieve a marble-like effect for your concrete surface by following some simple steps.
Step 1: Preparation of Surface
Thoroughly clean the surface to be coated before you start. The surface should be devoid of any cracks and stains. This will help the surface to be more receptive towards the coating. Clean the surface with a cleaning agent. A diamond grinder can also be used to remove obstinate stains.
Step 2: Select the Type of Stain Required
Acid staining and water based staining are the two different types of coating methods. Acid stains are available in neutral colors, but are also durable in nature. On the hand, water based stains are environmentally friendly products and are easy to work with. They protect the surface from harmful chemicals. Decide the type of stain well in advance, depending upon your requirements. Test the color of the stain before procuring it. Purchase the stains from a paint supplies store.
Step 3: Protection of Adjacent Infrastructure
Cover the areas that will not be coated with a cloth or newspaper. Ensure that all the furniture in the room is covered with a bed sheet. Use a glove to protect your hand before beginning the staining process.
Step 4: Selection of foam brush
Buy a foam brush from a paint-store supplier. Rollers can also be used to stain the concrete.
Step 5: Selection of design
Choose the design for the concrete surface before you begin. Browse through various home-improvement magazines and catalogues to select an appropriate design. You can also add your own inputs, if you have a considerable knowledge about painting and designing.
Step 6: The procedure
Use a saw with diamond blades to give the desired texture or pattern while applying the stain with the brush. You can also mark the various sections of the surface with the saw.
Cover the concluded sections while working on the exposed ones. Vary with the colours and apply a complementary colour to the border. Alter the brush strokes to create an enhanced appearance. The acid stain reacts with the concrete to produce a marble-like effect. Allow the stain to dry completely for a couple of hours. You can then add a second coat to the surface.
Step 7: Protection of stain
Protect the stain with a concrete sealant. Allow the entire surface to get dried overnight.
Step 8: Polishing of surface
Polishing is necessary to augment the beauty of the surface. Apply concrete wax to the entire surface. Polish it further with a clean towel or a buffer solution.
