Custom wood flooring adds beauty to a room and value to a home. If you want to create your own unique wood flooring design, you can use a  variety of procedures and technique to customize your floor. Be sure to choose a design that works well with the rest of your home.

Step 1 – Creating a Painted Stencil Design

Use a power sander to smooth out the wood flooring to remove any protective sealer from the surface. Use your stencils to create your flooring design. Position the stencils on the floor. Secure them with painter's tape. Apply your paint over the stencil. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly. Remove the stencils from the floor. Apply a polyurethane finish over the paint. Allow the finish to dry completely.

Step 2 – Creating a Painted Texture Design

Use a power sander to smooth out the wood flooring. Wipe the floor with tack cloth to remove any dust or debris from the wood. Use your paint brush to apply a layer of latex paint to the floor. Allow the paint enough time to dry completely. Mix one part of an coordinating latex paint with one part water. Dip your broom into the paint and water mixture. Sweep off any excess paint onto an old rag. Sweep the paint in one direction across the floor. Allow the paint mixture to dry. Sweep the paint onto the floor in the opposite direction across the floor and allow it to dry. Apply a polyurethane finish over the paint to protect it.

Step 3 – Creating an Antique Design

Use a power sander to smooth out the wood flooring. Wipe the floor with tack cloth to remove any dust or debris from the wood. Apply a layer of latex paint to the floor, working with long, even strokes. Allow the paint to dry. Apply another layer of paint. This paint should be a different coordinating color. Allow it to dry. Apply a third color paint and allow it to dry. Use sand paper to hand sand the floor. Remove varying layers of paint as you work. Pound the floor with a hammer to create a distressed effect over the sanded paint. Apply a polyurethane finish over the floor to protect it.

Step 4 – Creating an Inlay Design

Choose a medallion as a focal point on the flooring of your room. Visit your local home improvement store and speak to a professional about your plans to customize your flooring. Consider all of the decorative medallion options. There are a variety of medallion sizes, shapes and designs available. These medallions are manufactured with wood and metal.

Step 5 – Creating a Stain Design

Use your painter's tape to mark off the boundaries of your design. Apply your paint remover to a cloth. Rub the cloth on the areas to take off the stain or paint on the floor. Remove the painter's tape. Apply a polyurethane finish over the floor to protect it.

Step 6 – Creating a Varied Angle Design

Speak to the installer of your flooring. Speak with them about creating a unique design by varying the cut angles of the wood boards. This customized design will most likely increase the installation costs of the flooring. Be sure to take that into consideration.
