Pink foam insulation board is a simple way to add to the R rating of your home. It's easy to use, inexpensive and can be cut to fit any space. It is messy and can be frustrating to work with. Once you get the hang of it, it's not too bad. Here's what you should know if you are cutting your own pink foam insulation board.

Step 1 - Preparation

If you are working in an area inside your home, place the drop cloth over any furniture or carpets. Pink foam board will create small foam particles that will stick to everything through static and can be a mess to clean up. Most people don't have any problems with the dust created, but it can be bothersome. When you cut the board, you might opt to wear a particle mask and safety glasses since the dust can also cause irritation if it gets in your eyes.

Step 2 - Measure the Area

You will need to start by measuring the area you are adding the insulation. Be sure to account for anything that may get in the way. If you are installing this between beams, it's a good idea to measure in between the beams instead of measuring the entire area. This will be easier to install and give you a tighter fit.

Step 3 - Measure the Board

With the measurements from the area in hand, you can start to measure and mark the foam board. Be sure to use a yardstick or straight edge to mark your lines. This will allow you to make a perfect cut.

Step 4 - Cutting the Board

Instead of trying to cut all the way through the board, it's easier to score it along the lines you've marked. You can either use a special scoring tool or just make cuts with the utility knife. A score will not penetrate through the board all the way. Bring the foam board up on a bench or table's edge and snap against the scoreline. The board should easily break apart at the score marks.

Step 5 - Place Foam Board in Place

Take the piece you've cut and put it in the place where you measured earlier. Taking accurate measurements and making accurate cuts will prevent waste of materials and ensure that your pink foam board fits snugly in place.

Step 6 - Finishing and Cleaning

Repeat steps 2 through 5 for every section of foam board needed. Once all of the foam has been placed, you can start to hang drywall or cover the foam as you had originally planned. Be sure to roll up the drop cloth or plastic sheeting in a way that won't cause dust to spray all over the room. You can use a shop vacuum to clean up any residual dust and dirt left behind.
