Dealing with Downspout Drainage Dealing with Downspout Drainage

When summer comes and the heavy days of rain are upon us, you will be very grateful for the downspout drainage system that you have. Odds are you don’t even know that you have a downspout drainage system. If you head out to your yard, and look at the side of your house, you will see the large pipes that run along the side of the house extending from the rooftop gutters and down to the ground. The downspout is the pipe which opens up and away from the house, allowing the water to flow away from the house to prevent water damage.

Look at Your Surroundings

A downspout will work with every house provided that you make a few adjustments to it. If you find that you are in a very hilly area, you may notice that water and drainage tends to pool around your spout and the house itself. This will cause severe problems because water will eventually work its way into your base units and then it will start damaging the house itself. The simple solution to fixing this problem is to extend your downspout out and away from the house.

Extending Your Pipes

This is a surprisingly easy, but very time consuming project to undertake. You are going to have to ensure that the drainage is carried far enough away from your house so that it doesn’t cause any damage to the foundation. The first step is going to be to dig a series of trenches to lay underground pipes in to help carry the drainage a safe distance away from your home. After you go back and secure all of your pipes and then back fill the trenches with soil, your problem will be resolved. You will be able to attach your downspout to this system and the roof runoff will no longer be a problem for you.

Keeping Things Clean

One of the best ways for problems to occur is to not clean out your gutters and your downspout. It is always best to take care of them at the same time. Be sure that you clear out all debris that has collected within the pipe. If you don’t, water will collect in the pipe and cause the pipe to rust. Then you are going to have to deal with getting a brand new pipe to replace the old one. You can buy filters that are placed over the openings of the gutters that keep all large debris from getting into the pipes. If you do happen to come across a blockage, you can take a plumbers snake and use it to clean out the pipes. Be sure that you get them as clean as possible, this will prevent further problems.

Maintain the Pipes

Now that you have an idea of how to install a downspout drainage system, make it a point to stay up on the maintenance of the pipes and your gutters. Take time to check and be sure that everything is flowing freely and that things are working properly and are in a good state of repair.
