Differences Between an Indoor and an Outdoor Trellis Differences Between an Indoor and an Outdoor Trellis

An outdoor trellis is a common garden feature in many homes. The trellis acts as a support system which allows the plants to attain vertical height more comfortably. It is a useful structure especially if you have climbing plants in your yard. Besides its practical function, the trellis also adds a decorative touch to any garden. However, the feature is not limited to outdoor use only. Indoor trellises are also available which can help you achieve your desired décor. Some of the key differences between the two trellis types are given below.

Function

You can use indoor trellises for various purposes. They provide vital support for houseplants which enables you to grow healthier plants. The trellis may be used to hold up photographs and artwork or can serve as a privacy screen. You can use an indoor trellis to demarcate different sections of a room which enhances indoor décor. If you have unsightly areas on a wall or prefer to keep a certain corner of the room out of view, an indoor trellis is the perfect solution. The uses of a trellis outside are however more limited. Most trellises found in the garden serve as plant support structures. This allows you to grow your vines and other climbing plants more comfortably.

Material

Indoor trellises can be constructed from various materials such as wood, vinyl, fiberglass and metal. A wider variety of wood choices is possible as the trellis is sheltered from wet conditions and extreme temperature fluctuations. These weather conditions can cause much damage to most types of wood. Material choices for trellises meant for outdoors are usually restricted to metal and wood. These materials provide solid support for garden plants. Some common metals used for trellis construction are steel, iron, copper and aluminum. These metals have a high resistance to the elements which makes them ideal for outdoor structures. Hardwoods that are bug resistant and also resistant to decay are a good choice for outdoor trellises. The Western Red Cedar is one of the most popular choices for outdoor trellis construction.

Size and Weight

Indoor trellises are usually smaller in size than those used outdoors. This is because of space restrictions in the house. These trellises also tend to be made of lighter material as they usually support lightweight items.  In most cases, heavier material is used for trellises that are installed outdoors because the trellis must support plants which tend to become heavier as they grow. Resilience is a vital factor in construction of outside trellises which is why many of them tend to be large in size and heavy.

Flexibility

Most indoor trellises are stand-alone features. The beauty of this is that you can change the trellis location as need arises. This gives you more flexibility in décor options. However, trellises installed outdoors are usually more permanent structures. In most cases, the trellis is attached to a building or wall. Once installed, the trellis remains set in place for a long time to come.
