January DIM Star: DIY Residential Micro Hydro Power System

Once a month we like to shine the spotlight on an impressive DIYer by giving their shared project the old “Did It Myself” (DIM) stamp of honor. And, as an added bonus, all DIM Stars are automatically entered into consideration for our first annual DIM Awards in May.

This month we congratulate “Microhydroguy” on the hydro power system he constructed on his property. Share your project and next time it could be you!

What he did

Microhydroguy made use of the stream running through his property by manipulating the water path to turbulently flow through a catch box to the bottom of a hill where power is generated. With some pressure-treated wood, a bit of galvanized screening and some tubing, he makes it possible to generate energy whether the stream flows at 6 gallons a minute or 1,000.

Why we like it

Microhydroguy shows that with a little bit of ingenuity, you can harness the power of your natural surroundings.
