DIY Brick Paving Tips

Brick paving is a project that many people can do by themselves. Installing brick pavers can improve the look of nearly any outdoor area. If you plan on doing this project yourself, there are a few things that you will want to keep in mind. Here are a few DIY brick paving tips to remember.

Focus on Design First

The first thing that you are going to need to do is come up with a design for your brick pavers. You want to be able to draw out your design on paper. This is going to provide you with a way to visualize your job before you ever get started. This is going to be necessary so that your vision will be able to guide you throughout the process. By planning ahead of time, you will be able to see any potential problems with your design before you get started. This is also going to give you a reference to look back at when you are starting to lay the first brick pavers.

Ground Preparation

After you have a design, you will want to spend some time preparing the ground before installing the pavers. The first thing that you should do is call utility companies to have them mark where all the utility lines are located. You do not want to stick a shovel into the ground and hit some type of utility line. After that, you will want to make sure that you have the proper foundation to work with. You will want to fill in the area with about 6 inches of small stone before getting started. Make sure that this layer of stones is level and smooth. In order to determine how deep you need to dig, you need to factor in the height of the brick pavers and add that to your 6 inch base of gravel. This will ensure that your patio area is not too tall.

Before you start laying, you should put out some guides so that you will know where to lay the brick pavers. You should be able to do this with a chalk line and a tape measure. Use your tape measure to determine the center point of the area and then snap a chalk line. If you do this in both directions, you will have four quadrants that you can work in. This will make it easier on you when you have something to guide your laying.

Cutting the Brick Pavers

When you start laying the brick pavers, you are going to need to make some cuts along the edge in order to get them to fit in the space in which you are laying. There are many different ways that you could potentially cut the brick pavers. One of the best ways is to use a hand-held cutoff saw. This is going to allow you the flexibility to make cuts anywhere that you need to.
