DIY Rustic Curtain Ideas

What You'll Need
Pinking shears
Needle (a larger one might be easier to handle)
Black or dark colored thread

Make your own rustic curtains to give your home an extra touch of personality. There are many low cost ways to achieve that desirable rustic look. Follow these steps for a fun and easy project.

Step 1 - Find Material

Thrift stores are great sources of household items, including curtain rods and fabric, at below-retail prices. Fabric stores also sell remnants inexpensively. The fabric that lends itself to a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere will work well.

Step 2 - Cut Fabric

First, cut the fabric to fit over the window panes to be treated. Leave as much of an extra edge as desired so that the curtain fits directly over the glass or so that it has room to be gathered and provide extra protection at the sides. Also, cut the length so that it is 3 or 4 inches longer than the window to allow for the creation of a pocket for the curtain rod.

Step 3 – Prepare the Curtains

The curtains don’t need perfectly finished edges. There are at least 2 ways to create rustic edges. The first choice is to trim the curtains very close to the edge using pinking shears. The effect is casual and the fabric won’t fray. The second choice is to use the needle and thread to finish the edge with a simple whip stitch. Fold the fabric over to create a hem, then secure into place using the whip stitch.

Step 4 – Prepare to Hang

The curtain tops can be finished simply. Fold over the top of the curtain, about two or three inches, and whip stitch into place along the bottom of the fold to create a pocket for the curtain rod.

Step 5 – Hang the Curtains

The fun part is hanging the curtains! Use an existing or new curtain rod, or use a long stick or tree branch as a substitute for the rod.

Making rustic curtains can be inexpensive and create a look that can't be purchased in any store.
