Using a faux leather mirror frame to add an earthy warm feel to any room in your home is simple and will give your rustic decor personality. Follow these steps to create a one-of-a-kind art piece that is functional and beautiful.

Step 1: Choosing the Faux Leather

When choosing the faux leather for this project there are several things to keep in mind. The first is the color of the leather. Choose a warm tan color. The warmth of the faux leather will lend itself to the rustic feel of the mirror frame. Another thing to consider is the texture of the leather. Some faux leathers come in a natural texture and others offer an embossed look such as faux croc or snake skin. For this project it is recommended to stay with a natural leather texture as it will be the best choice when aging the leather. You will need to purchase 4 1/2 yards of faux leather.

Step 2: Cutting the Faux Leather

Use a pair of sharp scissors or a utility knife to cut the leather. Cut strips of leather that are the length of each side of the frame that you are choosing to cover. Add 4 inches to the length measurement as this will allow you to wrap the mirror frame. The width of the strip of leather should be 4 inches wider than the width of the mirror frame that you are using for this project.

Step 3: Wrapping the Frame

When wrapping the frame with the faux leather first fold in 1 inch on the side of the leather that will be facing the mirror. Doing this will give you a clean edge when joining the leather at the seams. Wrap each piece of leather around the sides of the frame stapling it around the back of the frame with a staple gun. Do this for all four sides. When you get to the corners miter them at a 45-degree angle to create a finished look to the leather frame.

Step 4: Aging the Faux Leather

To give the frame an aged rustic look use a cloth and rub a dark stain onto the faux leather. Allow the stain to dry for at least an hour before proceeding to the next step. The stain will work into the cracks of the faux leather and darken the look of the frame.

Step 5: Embellishing the Frame

To finish the frame, hammer old fashioned furniture tacks 1/2 inch apart as a border on the mirror. The tacks will add to the rustic feel of the mirror with a unique touch.

Remember when hanging the mirror to hang it with the center of the mirror at eye level.

Creating a rustic faux leather mirror frame is simple if you follow these 5 steps. This mirror frame is functional and will add warmth to any decor.
