EPDM Roof Repair: 3 Tips EPDM Roof Repair: 3 Tips
EPDM roof repair, in several ways, is different from the repair of the more conventional shingle or tile roofs. One of these differences is that with the right information, materials and tools, the average homeowner can easily repair the EPDM (rubber) roof. Here are 3 tips you can use to repair your rubber roof.
Tip 1 – Locate Sources of EPDM Roof Leaks
As in shingle and tile roofs, before you can repair leaks in EPDM roofs you will first need to locate the source of the leak. Usually you will find EPDM leaks in a seam or in the sealing of protrusions such as vents, HVAC units, chimneys, skylights, etc.
Tip 2 – Expose Your Seam for Inspection and Repair
Gravel is typically used to keep EPDM sheets from being blown off the roof by strong winds. To locate leaks in EPDM seams you will need to remove the gravel above the seam you are checking or repairing.
Tip 3 – Preparing Your EPDM Seam
Before gluing seams that have come apart, you will need to effectively clean them. The best way is to use an absorbent cloth such as a towel, and warm water. After cleaning the rubber around the leak, allow the rubber surface to dry before applying your adhesive.
