It is important to keep your dryer vent clean and use the correct equipment to avoid a fire caused by a buildup. This can be done with just a couple of tools that you most likely already have around the house or can purchase inexpensively. Cleaning your dryer should be a regular task.
Vacuum Cleaner or Shop Vac
A vacuum cleaner or a shop vac is a necessity. You can use the hose attachment for difficult-to-reach areas, such as behind the dryer and inside the vent outlet from the dryer to the vent hose. You also need this to clean out the inside of the vent cover both on the inside and outside of your home of lint, dust, and debris. Remove the front panel of your dryer and vacuum the outside of the drum, which should be visible and underneath the drum on the floor beneath.
A long-handled brush is also needed to clean inside the compartment where the dryer vent screen is housed. A lot of lint and debris can collect in this area and block proper air flow through the dryer and into the filter. This can cause a fire eventually. You can also use this brush to clean the filter screen.
