Establish a Young Majesty Palm Establish a Young Majesty Palm
Due to it's versatility, a young majesty palm can be grown either inside and outside your home. Because of the versatility of the majesty palm you only need to choose the location that is right for you. After the initial placement decision, all you will need to do is learn how to plant and care for your palm. Good soil, water and the right amount of light are the main requirements. For the purposes of this article, we will focus on establishing one indoors.
Step 1: Initial Planting
Establishing a young majesty palm is best done indoors. The good news is that if you are growing this type of plant indoors you do not have to worry about digging a hole or proper site selection in your yard. You need to make sure you have a large planter that allows for proper drainage. A majesty palm can grow to be between 5 and 8 feet, so you need a large enough planter that will handle a plant of this size. Be sure that you select an area of your home that receives a medium amount of light. Some shade is good, but it does need an average amount of natural sunlight in order to grow.
Step 2: Watering
This step is crucial, as a majesty palm needs a plenty of water, but it does not grow well if the roots are sitting in water. Damp soil conditions are best, as dry soil is just as bad as standing water in the soil. Humidity is important in establishing a young majesty palm. This type of plant needs to grow in fairly humid conditions, so it is a good idea to mist the palms with a spray bottle daily.
Step 3: Preventing Pests
The most common type of pest that is dangerous to a young majesty palm are spider mites. These can be taken care of with a mist of soapy water twice per day. If they are still an issue, water using the soapy water mixture, a more powerful mixture can also be purchased from most home and garden stores.
Step 4: Caring For The Soil
The final step in establishing a young majesty palm is soil care. Since the plant makes most of its food through photosynthesis, providing a medium amount of light is the most important step. You may need to add a small amount of water soluble fertilizer about once a week in order to insure proper growth. After that, just be sure to add the proper amount of water weekly. If the tips of the leaves begin to turn brown you may need to add more water.
As long as you understand what type of environment a palm tree needs than growing palm trees will not be difficult. In many areas they grow on their own without any help from gardeners. Using the steps above you will be able to move some of nature indoors for your enjoyment year round.
