Exposed Aggregate Concrete Maintenance Tips

Exposed aggregate concrete patios and sidewalks look great until they get dirty. With a little maintenance, you can have them looking like new.

Mildly Stained

If sweeping or hosing your slab didn’t cut it, try pressure washing it.

Severely Stained

If your concrete is badly stained, you can acid etch it clean again.  Pour a solution of muriatic acid and water over the slab and work it in with a broom. Avoid skin and eye contact with the acid. Let the acid work into the concrete then hose it off. If you do come into contact with the acid, immediately flush your skin or eyes with clean water. Be mindful to remove any acid puddles that pets could drink. Do not contaminate a nearby stream, well or storm drain with acid.

Seal Your Slab

The best way to keep your concrete looking good is to seal it. You can test your concrete to see if it is sealed by dribbling water onto it. If the water beads, your slab is sealed. If the water absorbs, your slab is unsealed. Use a high quality exterior concrete sealer. Be sure your slab is clean before sealing it. Once sealed you can simply broom or hose your concrete clean again.
