Fiberglass tape and fiberglass cloth are two construction materials widely used in industrial and commercial applications; both share the same major component that is fiberglass. They are also known for their strength, flexibility and durability.
There are many American companies that manufacture fiberglass tape and fiberglass cloth. Lately though, China is slowly making its presence felt in the marketplace.
Benefits of Fiberglass Cloth
Fiberglass cloth is a layer of woven fiberglass strands; it is used for a variety of purposes and applications in the marine industry. When building a boat, resin is placed on a layer of fiberglass cloth, which after hardening becomes the hull of the boat. Because of its inherent strength and lightness, it is the preferred material for kayak and canoe making; it also has intermeshed carbon fibers to make a strong textile-like material. Since it is made of inorganic materials, fiberglass cloth cannot be damaged by bacteria, fungus or ultraviolet rays.
It can withstand extreme heat—with some types known to tolerate temperatures up to 3000 degrees F. It is no wonder that many industries use it for thermal and electrical insulation.
They are also widely used for boat and ship repairs. Due to its smooth finish, it can be used for aesthetic purposes such as wood waterproofing. Fiberglass cloth is also considered a bulletproof material that is utilized heavily by the military for their vessels and vehicles. Placed side by side with steel, it is hands down far stronger and more durable.
Another major advantage of fiberglass cloth among builders is the price factor; it is sold cheaply. It is sold in various sizes: from 150 feet to 9,000 feet in length.
Benefits of Fiberglass Tape
Fiberglass tape is made of woven fiberglass cloth; it is known for its chemical and water resistant properties. It is a popular material in various industries as automotive and marine. Fiberglass tape placed on surfaces won’t easily peel off when immersed in water; making it ideal for boats and ships. Since it has anti-corrosive properties, it also has wide applications in plumbing where it is used to wrap sewer lines, pipelines and irrigation lines.
When used together with paper, it can be transformed into a supremely strong material that is ideal for repairs. It is also excellent for “stitch and glue” works such as bonding edges and covering seams. It comes in various shapes and sizes and is very easy to use and apply.
Differences between Fiberglass Tape and Fiberglass Cloth
Fiberglass cloth, combined with resins, is an excellent building material. Fiberglass tape is effective for repairs. The former is also ideal for purposes where aesthetics is a major consideration, while fiberglass tape is rarely used to enhance the visual appeal of a project.
Since they come in bigger dimensions and sizes, fiberglass cloth is good for large projects such as hull building. Fiberglass tape, however, is the preferred material for smaller jobs such as patch-up work.
