Fiberglass vs Gunite Pools Fiberglass vs Gunite Pools

When planning to have a swimming pool constructed in your own backyard, you may be faced with the dilemma of choosing between fiberglass and gunite pools. Fiberglass pools are made of fiberglass resin while gunite pools are made from a mixture of sand and concrete. While these two have both gained popularity among the masses and are truly great additions to any home, only one of these types of pools may work for you and your family. Each type of pool has its own advantages and disadvantages that you may want to consider before deciding which particular type you want installed in your property.

Fiberglass Pool

One of the best advantages that fiberglass pools have is that they are easy to clean and maintain. They have a smooth and non-abrasive surface which allows dirt and grime to be easily brushed off during cleaning period. This same smooth surface also allows owners to save more on their energy bills as this means that the pool pumps and filters need not have to work hard to keep the pool clean at all times.

A fiberglass pool is often prefabricated. It cannot be customized according to a person’s design preferences. Although fiberglass pools may come in different sizes and shapes, some people’s desire for more sophisticated design and more personalized style may not be met with this kind of pool. Individual choices with regards to design and style are often limited to what is already available.

Gunite Pool

Gunite pools can be customized according to a person’s desired style and personal design. They can be built into any sizes and shapes. Moreover, they are highly durable. They can last for years even when subjected to high pressures.

Gunite pools often have a rough finish, making them hard to clean and maintain. Moreover, they may be more expensive to install and may require a plaster layer which needs to be replaced every 10 to 15 years.

Both gunite pools and fiberglass pools can serve as a focal point in the outdoor portion of your home and may add aesthetic appeal to your property. Your total enjoyment, however, may depend on your choice and personal preferences.
