Finishing Tips for Your Bath Cabinet

If you have a bath cabinet that you are refinishing, there are a few tips that can help you. Finishing the cabinet isn't a difficult job and if you follow these guidelines you'll have a long lasting, professional looking result.

You Will Need

  • Spar varnish
  • Wood stain
  • Gloss oil based paint
  • Brushes
  • Rags
  • Mineral spirits
  • Rubber gloves
  • Sandpaper

Step 1: Stain and Varnish

If you decide to stain and varnish your bathroom cabinet, be sure to use oil-based products to get a more durable result. While oil-based products may be slightly more difficult to work with and most have an odor, they are extremely durable and resist the dampness of a bathroom well. Use disposable brushes if you don't like the clean up using mineral spirits. Be sure to wear rubber gloves so you won't stain your hands. Be sure the stain is completely dry before applying varnish. Use the sandpaper to smooth the surface of the wood and to open the pores so the stain will adhere.

Step 2: Paint

Many people prefer to use paint when finishing a bathroom cabinet. Paint can be purchased or tinted to match or contrast your bathroom decor. Oil-based paints are more durable for a damp area and are preferred for a bathroom. Gloss enamel paint is extremely durable and should also be considered.
