Fishing Reel Maintenance : A Guide Fishing Reel Maintenance : A Guide
If one of your hobbies is fishing, then you should know that fishing reel maintenance is very important and helps your reel last for a longer time. Make sure that you disassemble the fishing reel carefully so that no parts of it will be lost. Apart from this, there are also a few mistakes that you should avoid making during fishing reel maintenance.
1 – Disassembling the Fishing Reel
Clear the bench of your workshop or the table of your kitchen and put a rag on it. Now, remove the fishing reel from the fishing rod. Make sure that the rag is clean and then place your fishing reel over it. Start disassembling the parts of the reel slowly and carefully. Remember that the rag is there to prevent the parts from falling. These parts of the fishing reel include the roller, the handle and the reel itself, among many others. Do not lose any of these parts because if you lose something, you will not manage to re-assemble the fishing reel properly.
2 – Applying Oil and Grease
Never use cooking oil, vegetable oil or fat over your fishing reel. This is because these substances are all viscous, and their viscosity will increase in cold temperatures. Additionally, you should not use mineral oil either because it can corrode the plastic and rubber parts of your fishing reel.
On the other hand, you can use the oil brand WD-40, but make sure you do not make use of it too often. However, you are highly recommended to use a lithium-based grease or a manufacturer’s recommended oil.
Pay a lot of attention when you are spraying the lubricant. Do not spray the oil on the fishing line because it will leave a smell, and when you will throw the line in the water, it will repel fish, and they will not come close.
3 – Checking the Fishing Reel
If you still have the manual that you were given when you purchased the fishing rod, make sure you read it carefully for more information. You need to first clear away any dirt accumulated on the fishing reel and then check to see if it functions correctly. In case your fishing reel does not work properly, it requires some repair.
Fix the drag tightly so that there will be some resistance when you turn the spool. Now release the drag and the spool is supposed to spin freely. In case it does not spin freely, the drag washers may be faulty so you need to replace them with new ones immediately.
Check the other parts of your fishing reel as well and confirm that everything is working properly as if they were new. Check the handle by first spinning it and then releasing it. Count the turns and you should get approximately three revolutions.
4 – Storing the Fishing Reel
It is now time to place the fishing reel back on the fishing rod. Put back the parts in the same order in which you took them off if you disassembled the fishing reel. Store everything in a closet or somewhere where the temperature will not drop below room temperature. You also need to make sure that your storage place is free from moisture because moisture can damage the fishing reel.
