Fixing the Starter Cord on a Lawn Mower Fixing the Starter Cord on a Lawn Mower

What You'll Need
Screwdriver
Socket wrench

A lawn mower can be started using a key or a pull cord. Electric lawn mowers use a key, whereas all the rest actually use the pull cord. A pull cord can become tangled with any extensive use, making it difficult if not impossible to start your lawn mower. The guide below will help you fix your starter cord.

Step 1 – Remove Plastic Casing

Using your screwdriver, unscrew the four or five screws that surround the external plastic covering. Pull the plastic covering away from the lawn mower.

Step 2 – Remove the Cord Housing

Locate the cord. Follow it until you see where it connects to your lawn mower. It will likely be protected by a case or housing unit. Remove this casing by using your screwdriver. If there is a nut and bolt holding the housing together, take a socket wrench to remove it.

Step 3 – Detangle

Unravel the cord completely. Tug on any knots and remove them. Straighten the cord until all tangles are removed. Keep straight for about thirty seconds. Rewind it over the disk.

Step 4 – Reconnect

Re-attach the housing unit and the lawn mower cover. Prime the mower and pull the cord.
