Flat Braided Rug Tips And Techniques Flat Braided Rug Tips And Techniques

Making a flat braided rug is one of the most challenging rugs to create. We’ll look at some tips and techniques here that will help you to keep that braided rug flat while you are making it and how to make it stay that way over time.

Your Materials

Gather your materials together and follow these instructions for starting your rug:

  • Make all of your braids and bunch the braids together end to end to get the length you desire.
  • Begin lacing your finished braids together going in and out between the braid in the same way you would lace your shoes. Remember, you want the laces tight, but you don’t want them so tight that the rug begins to bunch up.

Keeping it Flat

The hardest part of the entire process is keeping the braided rug flat. There are several things that you can do to help keep it flat throughout the process:

  1. The first thing to do is to not let the rug bunch up as you lace it. Remember we said that we want the laces tight, but not too tight.
  2. You can put the braids in the dryer for a few minutes before you lace them together. This helps even the braids up a bit.
  3. Leave the rug lying flat as you lace it together. A large table works nicely for this, or you can do it on the floor.
  4. As the rug gains length and width during the lacing process., you can use a non-slip rug grid and tack it to the bottom every couple of inches which will help to keep it stiff.
