Flitch Flitch

A flitch is a long board that has been cut from a single log. The edges of a flitch are left on, often so that carpenters can incorporate them to make beautiful pieces of furniture. Most people are familiar with table tops made from flitch. They are incredibly easy to make and look extraordinary when they are finished.

  • Step 1: Choose a flitch board for your project. Try to find one with a unique coloring and interesting grains that will be large and enough for your project.
  • Step 2: If the board hasn't already been put through a planer you will want to sand it down. Make the top perfectly smooth, and don't forget the top part of the edges as well.
  • Step 3: Remove all of the dust and apply several coats of lacquer. The more coats you put on, the deeper the shine.
  • Step 4: After the lacquer has dried you can then prop it up on a wide, leveled stump. This method works great for coffee tables and provides a very rustic look.

Other Uses for Flitch

Although investing in flitch boards can be expensive, it can save a lot of hassle. Many people use them for cabinetry so that they don't have to glue several boards together.
