Furnace Troubleshooting: What to Do When Your Pressure Regulator Is Leaking Gas Furnace Troubleshooting: What to Do When Your Pressure Regulator Is Leaking Gas
Every gas furnace owner should be aware of certain basic furnace troubleshooting tips and methods. The pressure regulator in a gas furnace is essential since it maintains the flow of the gas to the furnace to heat the cold air coming in. A gas leak from the pressure regulator can affect the heating functions of the furnace, and it can be dangerous since it can lead to fire accidents or an explosion. Follow the instructions below to effectively locate the source and cause of a gas leak and take steps to fix it.
Step 1 – Beware of Gas Leaks
You should have gas leak detectors like carbon monoxide detectors in your home, especially you use a gas furnace for heat. When such detectors are in place, gas leaks can be known by their internal alarms. If that is not the case, then you should have at least a handheld gas leak detection instrument like the TIF8800 combustible gas analyzer with you to detect a gas leak whenever you become suspicious.
Step 2 – Take Precautionary Measures
Gas leakage can cause an explosion when not fixed immediately. As soon as you detect a leak, is important to take a few precautionary measures before you start to fix the problem. Do not operate switches or any electrical appliances. Do not light a match or any other flame or instigate any spark producing actions. Open the windows and doors so that the free air can circulate.
Step 4 – Close Inspection
Now you can safely inspect the furnace connections and integrity. There are certain common points which can easily crack, leak or become rusted like the welded points or reams. Pay careful attention to these components.
Step 4 - Locating the Leaking Point
To fix the problem, first you should make sure that gas is not leaking from the pressure regulator or any other places. For this ,you will have to mix detergent powder and water. Apply this soap mixture throughout the gas supply line in the furnace. If there is any puncture or warping you may find bubbling of the soapy mixture. Such points are the locations of gas leakage.
Step 4 – Tightening the Valve
If the leak is occurring in a valve or valves of the gas supply line, then you can try to fix them by tightening the connections with a wrench. However, ensure you do not tighten them too much since it can damage the connections or valves permanently and the leakage then becomes exacerbated.
Step 5 – Seek Professional Help
If there is still a gas leak, then it is advisable to hire professional help since it may be dangerous to proceed alone. If you go on meddling with the components in the pressure regulator without having a proper knowledge, it can lead to an explosion or other risks. Hence, calling for a professional to help you in time without delay to fix such a problem is important.
