If you are thinking about replacing your gas furnace thermocouple, there are a few things you may want to consider to ensure the job goes smoothly. Think about the tips below while you work.
Tip 1 - Always Shut off the Power
You have to make sure that you shut off the power going to the furnace and the gas that is going there as well. If either are left on, you could be left with a shock or explosion. Do not turn anything on until after installation is complete.
Tip 2 - Leave Time to Cool
Make sure that you leave at least an hour for the furnace to cool before you start working on it. The last thing you want is a burn from a simple replacement like this.
Tip 3 - Know Where All Your Nuts Go
If you have to reuse the nuts, bolts and screws from your old thermocouple for the new one, make sure you know where they are at all times and what they below to.
Tip 4 - Test the Thermocouple
Be sure to test the thermocouple prior to putting the access cover back on. You should have about 1/2" of the thermocouple in the pilot light's flame.
