Get Rid of Out of Control Chickweed
Chickweed is a hardy annual weed that thrives in colder climates. Found mostly during the spring and fall seasons, chickweed is edible and can be used to make tea or feed animals. However, it is an aggressive weed and can choke out a lawn. You can rid your yard of chickweed in a number of different ways.
Pull By Hand
By far, the most effective way to get rid of out-of-control chickweed is to pull it out by hand. Because of its shallow root system, you can yank chickweed from the ground easily, making sure that you have most of the roots. Do this before it begins to seed to prevent the chickweed from spreading.
If the weeds have already gotten out of control, a good fertilizer that also kills weeds is another alternative. Use a spreader and set it for thick coverage. As the lawn begins to grow thicker and healthier, the chickweed will not be able to germinate and get a good foothold in the lawn.
Apply Pre-Emergent to Gardens
Chickweed loves to grow in gardens that have been freshly turned over. Apply some pre-emergent chemical to the soil before you plant any of your garden vegetables. It will kill the chickweed seeds before they have a chance to grow. Discontinue use 2 weeks before you plant your garden.
