Going Green: How to Fix a Cracked Fiberglass Shower Pan Going Green: How to Fix a Cracked Fiberglass Shower Pan
Fiberglass shower pans crack with repeated usage. Here is how to fix them:
Fiberglass shower pans are repeatedly used, scoured, cleaned and this leads to stress and cracks in the pan. There are several ways to deal with this problem.
If the situation is bad, the best thing to do is replace the shower pan or install a liner over the top of it. Take this into consideration especially if the bathroom is on the second floor and the possibility of water leaking through your ceiling, wiring and onto your first floor is a possibility. Also, constant leaking can cause rotting of beams and growth of mold.
Fiberglass shower pan repair kits are available and include everything you would need to fix the problem, plus directions. One of the most popular kits is made by Bondo, the company that makes auto body repair supplies. The repair method basically involves cleaning the areas to be repaired thoroughly. Make sure all cleaning products are off the surface before you begin the repair. Apply fiberglass tape to the cracked area and then mix resin, hardener, and tint. Spread this over the taped area and smooth it as much as possible. Allow this mixture to harden. Sand the surface.
