Building a stone wall to be used as a retaining wall is something you can do yourself. Granite retaining walls offer excellent protection as well as a touch of beauty to any yard or garden. Here are a few tips if you are considering adding a natural stone wall to your home.
Plan First, Purchase Later
Most people will want to run out and get the stone for the retaining walls first, then decide where to build. It’s actually best to start planning it first though. If you have all the measurements you will have a better idea of exactly how much stone you need to purchase. This will save you additional trips to get more if you run short, or trying to figure out what to do with the extra if you have too much.
Get a Good Mix
When you purchase the granite, you want to make sure you are getting a good mix of flat and capped stones. The flatter stones will work best towards the base of the wall, and the capped stones will add a more decorative touch towards the top. A stone wall made entirely of flat stones may look unnatural, and make all of the caps difficult to construct.
