Halogen Or Fluorescent Desk Lamp: Which Uses More Energy? Halogen Or Fluorescent Desk Lamp: Which Uses More Energy?

Both halogen and fluorescent desk lamps have positive and negative features. If you are looking to save money on energy, fluorescent bulbs are the way to go. Halogen bulbs offer some savings over traditional standard bulbs, as well. Halogen and fluorescent lights have different applications, as well as different environmental factors beyond just energy usage. Depending on what you plan on using it for, here are some tips to decide which is the right lamp for you.

Halogen Desk Lamps

Halogen desk lamps are a good choice if you will be doing a lot of reading at your desk. The natural, bright light makes it easy to focus on text and helps to minimize eyestrain.

  • Pros: The bulb of a halogen light lasts 2 to 3 times longer than that of a standard bulb and uses 10% to 20% less energy. Typically available in 50 watt bulbs, the brighter whiter light decreases eyestrain and makes colors appear more vibrant.
  • Cons: Halogen desk lamps can cost up to 4 times more than standard lamps and lack the warm glow associated with a standard bulb. A lamp shade is imperative to keep the light out of the line of sight. Halogen bulbs are not compatible with all lamps. Additionally, the bulbs burn hotter, meaning that the inner bulb can explode if it touches moisture.

Fluorescent Desk Lamps

Fluorescent desk lamps come in many more shapes and sizes than halogen or standard bulbs and the light from them naturally diffuses, giving you a nice even light coverage great for working on a computer.

  • Pros: Fluorescent bulbs last 6 to 11 times longer than traditional bulbs, meaning less waste. Available in 20-21 watt bulbs, they are also very energy efficient. These bulbs also burn at a cooler temperature and only output 30% of its energy in heat, making it much cooler than a halogen bulb.
  • Cons: Fluorescent bulbs are also very fragile and can break easily. They contain a small amount of mercury that can seep into the ground if not disposed of properly. They should always be recycled. These bulbs are more expensive than standard ones, but cost about the same price as a halogen bulb.

If saving on energy is your main concern, a fluorescent desk lamp is definitely the way to go. However halogen also offers some energy savings and can be beneficial for different reasons. Check out some different varieties and make the decision that is right for your needs.
