Hanging a Tree Swing Hanging a Tree Swing

Hanging a tree swing is a relatively simple project that can provide a lot of enjoyment for your kids. Here are the basics of how to hang a tree swing effectively.

Finding the Location

The most important part of the process is finding the right location for the job. You want to locate a tree that has very strong branches to work with. Ideally, you would like to locate a branch on this tree that is at least 8 inches in diameter. You also want to make sure that you move out away from the trunk of the tree by 3 or 4 feet when you are measuring the diameter.

Use Eye Bolts

In the old days, you could simply tie a rope around the branch to secure it. However, this can actually damage the tree as the branch continues to grow. Instead of tying the rope around the branch, you should try to use eye bolts. This is going to allow you to drill down through the branch, and you will not permanently damage it. In fact, after a few years, the wood is going to grow around the outside of the eye bolt and with no permanent damage.
