Hazardous Waste vs Solid Waste

Solid waste becomes hazardous waste when it poses significant or potential threats to public health or the environment. Hazardous waste can be flammable, reactive, corrosive or toxic waste that can cause or greatly contribute to an increase in mortality rate or increase serious illnesses in an area.

Hazards to Human Health and Environment

Hazardous waste posts substantial hazard to the health of humans or the environment when it’s not properly disposed of, treated, stored or transported. These wastes are found in different physical states such as gases, liquids or solids and these cannot be disposed of by common means like other by-products of our daily lives. Treatment and solidification of hazardous wastes are still possible but it depends on the physical state of the waste. There’s not much that can be done in some cases to prevent harm, which is why it’s important to manage wastes properly at an early stage.

Nature of Solid Waste

Solid waste is any discarded material. It can be garbage, refuse, sludge from a wastewater treatment plant or any other discarded material including solid, liquid, semi-solid, or contained gaseous material such as the ones resulting from industrial activities. When these discarded materials are not properly managed, these can turn into hazardous waste. Hence, proper solid waste management is being promoted by communities to ensure these solid wastes don’t become hazardous to humans in the future.
