Vinyl composition tiles are also known as Vinyl Composite Tiles (VCT) and they are commonly used in both kitchens and bathrooms. The advantage to this type of tiling is that it is significantly cheaper than other types of tiling while still being durable and hardwearing. However, the disadvantage of these tiles is that they can be hazardous in the following ways:

Persistent Bio-accumulative Toxins

They are commonly known by the acronym PBT and although they are not harmful in small doses, they accumulate over time to build up to harmful effects. Vinyl composition tiles contain these chemicals. These toxins are associated with negative effects on the nervous system, reproduction, and development, as well as cancer.

Volatile Organic Compound

They are commonly known by the acronym VOC and are commonly found in paints, however, they are also found in vinyl composition tiles. A low level of exposure can cause nausea and headaches, however larger or more prolonged exposure can cause asthma, childhood cancer, as well as damage to your liver and kidneys.

Flammable Adhesive

While vinyl composition tiles are highly resistant to flames, some of the adhesive used to glue it to the floor is highly flammable. If the adhesive that you are using is solvent-based then it will be flammable, therefore you are better off using a non-solvent-based adhesive although it might be slightly more expensive.
