Home Decor Living Room Do's and Don'ts Home Decor Living Room Do's and Don'ts

If you are decorating a living room for comfort and elegance there are a few things you should keep in mind. There are some tips which can really help you to improve the home decor living room design for a functional room that everyone in your family can enjoy.

Dos

The first rule of decorating the living room should be: remember what the room is for. The living room is the hub of the house. Living rooms can be used for a variety of functions: if you entertain in your living room, this will require a different decor to a room mainly used for watching the television.

You should also create a focal point in the living room. The focal point should function as the center of a room; you can arrange sofas and tables around. In most homes, this focal area is the television or fireplace. Those who entertain more may prefer to arrange the room around a dining table, or perhaps around an empty area where guests can mingle.

The color in the room should be coordinated to flow. Carpets and rugs, or rugs and sofa throws, should all incorporate a unifying theme. Be sure you take into consideration the theme before you make any large purchases. As well as coordination, repetition is another good method of decorating a room: use the same color in different tones and shades to create a subtle palette of colors.

Take inventory of a room and map out a plan for the room. There is software you can use to plan a room for space. If you prefer to plan manually, you can take graph paper to chart your room and its furniture.

Don'ts

The most important thing to remember is that paint color can always be changed to match your furniture or theme. Paint is inexpensive so do not match the furniture to the paint; match the paint to the furniture. Furniture, carpeting and rugs are all expensive items, so be sure to pick those first. The paint color on the walls should complement the furniture.

Your furniture should not overwhelm the room. Bring in a little bit at a time, to properly arrange and create a feeling of closeness and warmth.

Don't allow clutter to make the room feel claustrophobic. Many homeowners find that they have massed large collections over the years. Avoid clumping them together in the living room. Keep collectibles and knick-knacks to a minimum. At the same time, don't forget to add your personality to the room with personal photos or mementos.

Do not force the issue of color. Be sure that everything flows, but it does not have to match perfectly. Instead use similar shades and tones to keep a room looking warm. A room that has the exact shade of any color throughout the room will look forced, sterile and uncomfortable. Instead, add personal touches and keep a color theme in the room.

Don’t be afraid to try new things because you can always change the room again. Be creative and make the room your own.
