Homemade Rust Remover Recipe

What You'll Need
Cream of Tartar
Baking soda
Hydrogen peroxide
Metal polish

Rust remover is expensive, and it is made with chemicals that are not healthy for you to breathe. An alternative to commercial rust remover is to make your own homemade rust remover. It is easy to make and use, with just a few of supplies.

Step 1 - Mixing the Rust Remover

Depending on how large an area you are removing the rust from, combine half cream of tartar and half baking soda in a bowl. Next stir in enough of the hydrogen peroxide to make a spreadable paste. You'll be ready to apply it to the rusty areas.

Step 2 - Applying the Rust Remover

Apply the remover with a rag to the rusty areas in a thick layer. Allow it to sit on the rusted areas for 30 to 45 minutes. Use a sponge and cold water to rub the rust away. If you still notice rust, repeat this process until it is gone.

Step 3 - Protect the Surface

To protect the surface from the rust returning, apply metal polish with a dry rag. Polishing the areas every 2 weeks will keep the rust away.
