How do I fill the crack where crown molding trim meets the wall?

Crown molding trim is an elegant way to decorate the upper portion of walls in a room. However, whether due to irregularities in the walls or the expansion or contraction of the wood, unsightly gaps can be present between the trim and the wall. Taking care of the gaps is an easy fix that requires a ladder and a caulking gun.

Filling the Gaps

Only the proper product should be used to fill those gaps. A silicone caulk, for instance, that is 100% silicone will not shrink and will stay flexible but can be messy at application because of its stickiness that makes it tough to install, and it also will not hold paint very well.

A Siliconized Latex or a Siliconized Acrylic caulk is somewhere in between a rigid latex and a silicone caulk, easier to apply and more flexible than pure acrylic, but still not as flexible as pure silicone. Applied with a caulking gun, it offers workability at application making it easy to fill the gaps between crown molding and walls. This type of caulking adheres to both surfaces well, is easy to smooth with your finger, and remains flexible, allowing the wood to "breathe". It's also easy to paint.
