How Does an Electronic Stud Finder Work? How Does an Electronic Stud Finder Work?

A stud finder can prove to be a useful piece of equipment that can help you with a wide range of do it yourself projects, from hanging a framed picture to installing a recessed wall. By understanding how it works, you can be better informed about why you need to use it.

Purpose

A stud finder is a small handheld device that is available from many hardware and electronic goods stores in the DIY section. The electronic variety will require the addition of batteries to run it and will be simple to use. Different varieties use different methods, but their purpose is to locate the position of the studs within walls. The studs are beams fitted beyond the surface of the wall to create a cavity and can be made of wood or metal.

The smooth surface of the wall that you can see will give nothing away in respect of where the studs are so that stud finder is required to find them so that you do not cause unnecessary damage or know what you will encounter beyond the wall. The studs will usually be fitted at regular intervals so you will find that you can find all of them by gradually working your way horizontally across the wall.

Directions

The manner in which a stud finder is used is as simple as turning it on and slowly running the sensor across the wall. Different varieties will use different methods, but a sound such as a beep will often be used to confirm that a stud is beyond a particular point on the wall. However, others may also comprise a visual display to outline relevant information.

It is recommended that you keep a pencil handy when using a stud detector so that you can mark the position of the studs so that you do not lose track when working on a large area. To ensure that you get a correct reading, you should use the appliance at the top if the wall as well as at the bottom to ensure that they match.

Types

There are various types of stud finder on the market which use different methods of locating the studs, for example, a magnetic one will make use of magnets to find metal beams or the nails and screws used to construct a wooden stud. However, an electronic finder works by sensing the difference in the materials beyond the wall due to their differing densities.

The most basic stud detector will simply be using your fingers to knock on the wall. Though there is a danger that this will not be entirely accurate, it is a simple way to get a general idea of where studs are located by the difference in sound from hollow to solid.

Method

An electronic stud detector does its job by making use of a component called a capacitor plate. This works by measuring the amount of energy that any given material produces. The appliance will give a signal when the energy within the electrostatic field of a material changes which confirms that it has detected a different substance.
