How Much Will an Outdoor Kitchen Cost? How Much Will an Outdoor Kitchen Cost?

Outdoor kitchens are a lovely addition to any home and are becoming more popular with home owners. However, they do take money to build, and depending on what you want in your outdoor kitchen, the cost may exceed your budget.

Building Materials

Depending on what you use to build your outdoor kitchen, you can expect to pay, at a minimum, approximately $3000. While this may seem inexpensive for an outdoor kitchen, the main items you will purchase will only consist of a grill and a counter into which the grill is built.

You can save money by choosing less expensive building materials such as stainless steel. If you select stainless steel you may decide to buy it by the sheet and cut it to meet your specifications for your counter top.

The appliances you choose for your outdoor kitchen can include everything from a grill to a complete kitchen with a sink and refrigerator. A sink and refrigerator aren’t necessary for an outdoor kitchen but they certainly make entertaining a lot more fun. Lower-end stainless steel outdoor sinks can be purchased for around $200 but you also need to take into account that you will need to run electricity and water from you home to your outdoor appliances.

If you want your outdoor kitchen farther away from your home, you can purchase an individual water heater. This way you don’t have to run hot water pipes across your back yard just to have the water available for your sink. In the long run, this may result in saving you money.

You can purchase stainless steel refrigerators that mount under cabinets for outdoor kitchens. Generally these refrigerators don’t have a freezer unit but free standing refrigerators do.

Design and Contracting

Labor for building an outdoor kitchen can be expensive. You can save money by doing it yourself, but if you’re not a very good construction worker or if you don’t have the time to devote to such a large project, it’s better that you hire a contractor. It may be to your advantage to have person with a design background give you ideas for your outdoor kitchen. While this can cost you more, you will end up spending less money later for repairs because the job was done correctly the first time.

Although you can spend anywhere from $3000 to $30,000 on your outdoor kitchen, you should expect a high return if and when you decide to sell your home because outdoor kitchens are very much in demand.
