Screen Material

A screen porch is a great addition to any outdoor living space. It can provide bug free enjoyment of the great outdoors. If you have a little experience with do it yourself projects this is something that can be done in just a matter or days.

Step 1- Foundation

Before you begin construction on a screened porch you need to make sure you have a solid base for the porch. An existing deck may be used, but remember that bugs will be able to get in through the cracks in the wood on the floor. You may want to add something under the deck to prevent this from happening. If you are building a porch from scratch, you will not have a problem as long as you lay a proper foundation.

Step 2- Framing

Even if you already have a porch and you are just screening it in, you will need to construct a basic frame. You can use 2x4 lumber for the frame. The framing is done like any other structure with the exception that you will be adding screen in stead of walls.

Step 3- Buying and Attaching the Screens

Buy a high-quality screening material that can withstand the weather in your region. You can find appropriate screens in a variety of materials, such as rustproof bronze, aluminum and anodized aluminum. Vinyl is becoming a popular choice because of its affordability, but you may not get the durability you would with metal screens. What you choose will depend on your needs, taste and budget. The screen can be painted if you desire before you install it.

It will take two people to install this without sagging or bulging. One person will need to hold the screen taught while the other attaches it to the frame. Attach the screen to the frame using a pneumatic stapler.

Step 4- Trim Work

The trim work and painting is the next step in the process. You will want to attach trim or molding over where you have installed the screen. You can then finish the trim work as you please and paint the exposed frame to give it a more homey feel.

Step 5- Install Doors

Adding your screen doors will be the last step. The easiest way to do this is to buy pre-fabricated doors and attach them to the frame in the openings you left for the door. For a custom look, you can create a door frame and attach the screen to it just as you did for the porch.

You’re done with your screened porch. You and your family and any guests can now enjoy the pleasure of being outside without all the pesky insects!
