How to Adjust Air Brake System Slack How to Adjust Air Brake System Slack

What You'll Need
Chalk or pencil
Measuring tape or ruler
Tire chock or piece of wood

You can easily adjust the air brake slack in your vehicle. Here is an easy to follow guide that will show you how.

Step 1 - Chock the Wheels

Use a tire chock or piece of wood to chock the wheels so that it won't roll while you are adjusting the brakes.

Step 2 - Release Air in Brakes

Locate the axle housing and the air release valve for the brake system (refer to owner's manual if needed). Lower the emergency brake while releasing the air from the release valve.

Step 3 - Mark Push Rods

Mark the point where the push rod protrudes from the air chamber with the chalk. Then, pull the rod out of the air chamber. You may need to use a wrench or other tool for leverage. Measure from the line you made to the air chamber. If the distance is more than about 3/4 inch, the brakes need to be adjusted.

Step 4 - Adjust Slack Adjusters

Find the slack adjuster (it should be very near to the push rod). Use a wrench to tighten the until you feel some resistance. If you turn the adjustment bolt the wrong way, the push rod will continue to extend from the air chamber. If this occurs, simply reverse directions.
