How to Adjust the Trailer Winch Gear Ratio
If you need to slow down or increase the amount of strength which your trailer winch uses to draw the boat onto the trailer, you should consider adjusting the winch gear ratio. In order to change the ratio, you need to make sure that you get the gears correctly aligned. This is not a difficult task, and you should be able to complete it quickly if you follow a few steps.
Step 1 - Locating the Winch
You should begin by opening the gear shaft on your trailer winch. This gear shaft is the device which controls how the trailer winch is turning. You should be able to find the gear shaft on the edge of your trailer, and this is vital to making sure that you can complete the adjustment.
Step 2 - Adjust the Winch
Once the winch has been opened, adjust it using your screwdriver. Turn the screwdriver clockwise to speed up the winch, and counterclockwise to slow it down. Check that you have the correct speed before you close the gear shaft by running the winch for a few seconds. This should show you how quickly the device is turning. You can then shut the gear shaft.
