A metal carport is an ideal secondary garage that is lightweight, easy to assemble and affordable. It is primarily used to house a car by keeping it away from the outside elements such as rain, snow and heat. Due to the lightweight nature of metal carports, it is necessary to secure it into solid ground such as concrete. Below are the materials that you need along with the instructions on how to anchor a metal carport into concrete.

Step 1-Get Prepped

Protective gears are necessary when anchoring your metal carport. Wear a pair of safety glasses along with working gloves to protect yourself from hammering and drilling accidents.

Step 2-Prepare for Drilling

Insert a masonry drill bit into the drill. Make sure to use a drill bit with the same size as the anchor bolts that you are using. Anchor bolts come in different sizes with different drill depth requirements. Determine the ideal drilling depth of your anchor bolts and calibrate the drill’s depth gauge in accordance with the anchor bolts specific type and size.

Step 3- Set the Depth Gauge

The base rail of your metal carport has a depth gauge that serves as a guide to how deep you should drill into the metal concrete. This serves as your primary depth gauge. Prepare a secondary depth gauge in case the primary depth gauge slides off during drilling. To do this, measure the height between the base rail and the tip of the depth gauge using a tape measure. Transfer the measurements into the masonry bit and wrap the masonry bit with electrical tape in accordance with the measurement of the primary depth gauge.

Step 4-Drill

Position the base rail in its proper place and drill into the mounting holes of the base rail using the hammer drill with the marked secondary depth gauge. Stop drilling once the primary depth gauge makes contact with concrete or when tape electrical tape in your secondary depth gauge is aligned with the base rail top. Drill the remaining mounting holes. After drilling all of the mounting holes, clear the concrete debris in the drilled holes using an air bulb.

Step 5-Install the Anchor Bolts

With the nut and the washer attached at the end of the anchor bolt, insert the anchor bolt into the mounting hole of the base rail and through the drilled concrete hole. Set the anchor bolt into the concrete by lightly tapping the anchor bolt using a hammer. Continue tapping the anchor bolt into the hole until the anchor bolt stops moving. Make sure that the nut of the anchor bolt is in solid contact with the base of the mounting hole.

Step 6-Secure the Anchor Bolt Nut

Set the right torque setting of your torque wrench in accordance with the specific torque setting specified by the manufacturer of the anchor bolt that you using. Tighten the anchor bolt nut with the torque wrench until you hear a clicking sound from your torque wrench. Make sure not to turn the nut after your hear the clicking sound so as not to damage the anchor bolt and the concrete hole.

Step 6-Finish Drilling and Anchoring

Repeat steps 1 to 4 to completely anchor your metal carport to the concrete ground. Make sure to always wear your protective gear.
