Pool deck coating provides a protective textured surface around your pool that is non-slip. It also provides an attractive pool feature that can come in a variety of different styles and composites. You needn’t employ a contractor to install your pool deck coating for you. This simple guide will give you step-by-step instructions to help you lay the deck coating yourself, saving you money.

Step 1 - Clean the Existing Concrete

The first step is to prepare the existing concrete layer that you are going to apply your deck coating to. You will need to make sure the surface has been completely treated to remove any dirt, residue, and debris. Using a high-pressure power washer, completely clean over the surface. This will also help to remove any grease that has been left from substances such as sun tan lotion.

Step 2 - Treat the Existing Concrete

Then treat the surface with a Muriatic acid solution. This will remove any further grease you can’t see and prepare the surface for the new pool deck coating. Make sure you wear gloves and boots to protect yourself, and a respirator so you don’t breathe in any fumes. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when you are mixing the solution. Use a still broom to push the acid solution over your existing concrete area, as this will work it into the cracks. Hose off the concrete with water once you have applied the acid solution.

Step 3 - Even the Concrete

If your existing concrete surface has ridges that are significantly higher than the rest of the surface, use a concrete grinder to grind these down. If there are any protruding ridges of concrete left these will stop the pool deck coating from drying evenly.

Step 4 - Fill Cracks in the Existing Concrete

You may find your existing concrete has cracks in it. If this is the case, you will need to fill the cracks in before you install a new pool deck coating. To do this use a flexible epoxy filler suitable for concrete. Make sure you wear gloves and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 5 - Apply Your Pool Deck Coating

Elastomeric pool deck coating can be rolled over a concrete surface like paint. It is available in a variety of colors and textures and can be purchased from most hardware stores. Make sure you purchase a coating that is fully waterproof and weatherproof. You may have to mix the components of the coating before you apply it.

Use a coating roller to apply the deck coating evenly around your pool. You should then leave the coating to dry for at least 24 hours. Do not apply the deck coating if there is a possibility of rain or bad weather during this time or this may affect how the coating dries.
