How to Apply Gutter Sealant

Gutter sealant provides a long-lasting and fully weatherproof seal to almost any gutter materials. A good sealant can also provide further resistance to cracking. Depending on the sealant that you buy, it can either be suitable for wood, plastic or metal or a combination of these. Some sealants can also be applied to surfaces which are already damp. Follow the steps below to effectively apply sealant to your own gutter.

Tools and Materials

  • Gutter sealant with sealant gun
  • Putty knife

Step 1 – Prepare the Surface

To ensure best results, clean the area that you need to seal thoroughly. Get rid of any dirt, algae or other materials before applying the sealant. Dry the area as much as you can as well.

Step 2 – Apply the Sealer

Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for any additional notes specific to the product that you have purchased. Cut the end of the nozzle of the sealant gun that comes with the product, and then apply it to the area to be sealed. Apply the sealant slowly and evenly in all areas, applying it at an angle.

Step 3 – Smooth the Sealer

Smooth out the sealer that you have applied using a putty knife, getting rid of any excess in the process. The product will take a while to dry. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for exact drying times.
