How to Apply Slate Sealer
Slate sealer should be applied to slate tiles either on floors or walls to prevent cracking and other damage. Slate sealer, while not mandatory, will help keep your installation good for years to come, also providing it with a better, finished appearance.
Step 1 - Choose the Appropriate Sealer
You can go for either a matte or a glossy sealer according to your preference. Sealers also come in the topical variety, only covering the surface, while others penetrate the surface providing more protection of the stone. There are also water and chemical based sealers. Get the right sealer for your purposes at any home improvement store.
Step 2 – Mix the Sealer
Mix some of the sealer into the grout mixture as directed by the manufacturer’s instructions. Make sure that the mortar is dry before applying the grout.
Step 3 – Apply the Mixture
Apply the mixture, cleaning away any excess in the process. Leave it for about a week to dry thoroughly.
Step 4 – Apply the Sealant
Following the grain of the tile, apply an even coat of the sealer over the surface making sure that there are no streaks or drops. Allow it to dry for 2 hours, and then apply a second coat. Allow this to dry for a further 2 hours before using the surface.
