How to Attach Wood Chair Casters

What You'll Need
Wood drill bits
Measuring tape
Damp rag

Wood chair casters typically are not included on chairs when you buy the chairs. If you want casters, you may have to add them to your chairs. Here are a few tips that should help you choose and attach them.

Step 1 – Preparing to Install Chair Casters

Your first challenge will be to buy the right type of caster. You need casters with stems that fit into holes you'll make in the bottom of your chair leg. Be sure your drill bit and stems are the same diameter.

Step 2 – Making Holes for Your Caster Stems

Using a drill and a bit that is the same diameter as your caster stem, drill a hole up through the bottom of your chair leg and into the leg. Be sure you have enough wood beside each hole to support the force that will be put on the leg from the caster when someone sits on the chair.

Step 3 – Insert the Caster

Apply glue to the caster stem, insert the stem into the hole in the chair leg. Tap the caster to be sure it is firmly and solidly seated into the hole. Then, wipe away any excess glue, and wait for the glue to set up.
