When you are trying to make the decision on whether or not you want to use slate tile in your home, there are many things that are probably running through your mind. Maybe you are trying to figure out if you can use it inside your home or if it is strictly for outdoor use. Once you realize that you can put it inside your home you may then be wondering just how you are supposed to clean it. Here is a method that is fast, quick and one that is safe for your slate. You won’t have to worry about any danger to your tile and you will feel safe and confident that this is the best method.

Step 1 – Preparation

Of course the first thing that you are going to want to do is make sure that you remove any and all debris that may be on the slate. You could use a broom but if you have a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment, this would be a better choice. Because of the crevices in the slate, a vacuum will be able to get the dirt out more efficiently than the broom. You also want to make sure that you get all of the crevices and around all of your appliances as well. Now that you have the loose dirt removed you can get down to the real dirt that is lurking underneath. Using your bucket, fill it with hot water and add one cap full of the dish detergent. This is a mild detergent and will not harm your slate but will effectively get it clean.

Step 2 – Clean the Slate

Using one of the cotton rope mops, you will want to clean your slate. Be sure not to soak the slate as it is very porous and soaks in the water. Using the same mop, go over your entire floor to get it clean. Now, use the second cotton rope mop that you have and dry mop the floor. This is going to take up and excess water that was left behind from your first go around on the floor. Again, your slate is porous and has many crevices so be sure to get every corner and around your appliances when dry mopping as well.

Step 3 – Dry the Slate

To get your slate to dry, you want to let it dry naturally. You can always have a fan going to help the process along. Once it has completely dried, you will see that your slate still looks as though it is new and has never been dirty. By using the dish washing soap, you are going to be using a cleaner that is very mild and safe for your tile.
