A bathtub deck can render a different feel to the bathing experience and provide a convenient place to dry off without having to leave the area. Follow the simple steps below to build your own bathtub deck.
Tools and Materials
- Filler Gravel
- Tape Measure
- Rim Joists
- Deck Boards
- Galvanized Nails
Step 1: Initial Steps
Measure an area in the backyard that is 8x8 feet. Place a square of the same dimension on this area. At all four corners of the square, drive in stakes. Check that the diagonals of the square are of the exact same length.
Step 2: First Few Stakes
Attach a string to the adjacent stakes and pull it diagonally so that two diagonals are formed. At the point of intersection, drive in another stake. Leave a four inch gap from the side of the corner stakes and mark the point. At this point, drive in more stakes. Repeat this for all four sides of the square structure. A cross shape will be formed. From the center of this cross, measure 30 inches and again place a stake. Repeat on all sides.
Step 3: Last Stakes
From the point of the last two stakes, measure 30 inches again and drive in four more stakes. Now you have all the stakes inside the square to form the pier footings of the deck.
Step 4: Digging
Dig a one foot hole, of dimensions 15x15 inches in the inner areas of the nine stakes inserted. Fill up 3 inches of this hole with filler gravel. Use the shovel head to line up the filler evenly. Take the footing and place on the gravel so that the straps are in the direction of the beams. Place the footing block in the hole so that it does not wobble. For all the holes dug up, repeat the same step with the footing block.
Step 5: Securing Beams
Fill any holes near the footings with gravel and tamp down. Make sure that there are no dents or puddles formed around. You should have two boards that are 2x6 inches and 8 feet long. Secure them together by nailing at the corners and sides. This shall form the beam post. Place the post, first at the center portion and see the height. To this, add more twelve inches to calculate the deck height. All the remaining posts must be at level with this main post.
Place the ties on the posts and nails through the pre drilled holes. Make a mark 16 feet away from the end of the beam and place on the posts. Nail through the strap and the holder of the beam to secure the beam.
Step 6: Final Steps
Nail up a two by six feet beam joist at both ends of all the beams. See that the diagonals are equal after placing all the beams. Secure the rim joist to the joist ends. Mark 6.25 feet from the joist end and align the deck boards at their ends for nailing up at the marks made. The bathtub deck is all ready. You may stain it with polish or primer as per your taste.
