How to Build a Bookshelf Door How to Build a Bookshelf Door
If you have a bookshelf in your home, you might need to build a bookshelf door. There are many different ways to build an attachable door, and the instructions will vary based on what you wish to do. Below is a basic guide that you can customize to fit your situation.
Step 1 - Measure the Wood
Start by determining how big you need the doors to be. Allow for 1/2 to 1 inch of space on the outside where the hinges will go, and then just measure the height and width you want the door to be. Make the necessary marks on your wood.
Step 2 - Mark for the Doors
If you have two doors for the bookshelf, mark the exact center so you know where they should line up. Also make a mark where you want the hinges to go. Use your level to ensure that everything lines up properly. Plan to place the hinges a few inches in. You don't want them at the very top or very bottom, but you still want them close to the edges for maximum stability.
Step 3 -Drill the Screw Holes
Once you have the holes marked, it may be easier to drill the holes for the screws prior to putting up the door. You don't have to drill it all the way, but get it going enough for a strong hold when the door goes up.
Step 4 - Cut the Door
Use your measurements from before and cut the door for your shelf. If you want to be on the safe side, cut it a bit big and then trim it down. Sand the edges down so that you don't get any sort of splinters.
Step 5 - Attach the Hinges
Mark the areas of the door where the hinges will go. Make sure that you are accurate with this since you have already drilled the holes. If you are worried about messing up, skip step 3 until after you have the hinges on the doors.
Step 6 - Screw in the Door
Take your electric screwdriver and attach the door(s) with hinges to the wall. Try to use your level as much as possible to ensure that the door does not hang crooked. Screw all of the screws in loosely at first and then tighten once everything is up.
Step 7 - Finishing Touches
Now that the door is up, you can add paint, stain, or any other finishes that you want. Consider using some wood trim to frame a box on the outside, or use decorative handles for a fashionable touch. Just get creative.
