How to Build a Box-Frame for Deck Steps

Tools and Materials Lumber

  • Blocking board
  • Blocking pieces
  • Saw
  • Hammer
  • Nails
  • Decking screws
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil or marking pen
  • Protective eyeglasses
  • Working gloves

Step 1 – Take Measurements

Measure the desired width and height of your steps, and then use these measurements to create your box step.

Step 2 – Cut the Lumber 

If you are using 2x6-inch lumber, you need to cut two pieces of this lumber to fit into the desired width of your step. After cutting the lumber, take out your blocking pieces and cut the appropriate number of 8 inch blocks.

Step 3 – Assemble the Box Step

Arrange the blocking pieces on the ground, and then put the blocking board over them. There should be one to two blocking pieces at each end of the blocking board and on the center of the board. You may place the blocking pieces around 16 to 24 inches apart around the middle of the board. Use decking screws to secure the pieces together to create a box frame.
