How to Build a Brick Barbecue Smoker
Having a brick barbecue smoker in your garden will help you prepare the most delicious barbecued meat items with your own smoker. Though ready-to-use barbecue smokers are available in the market, they can be expensive. You can build a brick barbecue smoker in your garden area with very little investment and a only day’s time.
Step by Step Procedure
Step 1 – Determine the Size of the Smoker
Using your cooking tray as a guide, prepare a layout for the brick barbecue smoker in the garden area which you have selected for building the smoker.
Step 2 – Mortar Preparation
Take five parts of sand and one part of cement and mix them together with enough water so that you get a stiff consistent mortar.
Step 3 – Base of the Smoker
Spread the mortar for foundation as per the dimension of the smoker you require. Use the spirit level to mark the edges of the smoker. Place the first layer of bricks on the mortar. Check whether the corners are at right angles while placing the bricks. After placing the first layer of bricks, check the level again with the spirit level and make adjustments if required.
Step 4 – Make the wall Stronger
Place a metal tie in the mortar where the inner wall is meeting the outer wall and join the outer wall with the inner wall of the barbecue smoker so that the strength of the smoker is enhanced.
Step 5 – Stack Brick Layers
Again apply some mortar and place another layer of brick by starting at the corners. While stacking the bricks in the successive layers keep them alternately at the middle portion of the brick. After finishing each layer of brick check the angle with the spirit level.
Step 7 – Provision of Ledge for Charcoal Tray
Stack the bricks up to seven layers and then you will have to create a ledge for the charcoal tray. You will have to turn the bricks on the left wall and the inner wall to the sides in order to create a ledge for placing the charcoal tray. Then add a flush edge at the outer edge by keeping half bricks.
Step 8 - Provision of Ledge for Grill Tray
Add three more layers of bricks and then like you did for the ledge for the charcoal tray, create another ledge for keeping the grill tray by turning the bricks to the side.
Step 9 – Finishing Touches
After doing this use a pipe or long and flat wooden piece to give a neat finishing to the exterior walls of the barbecue smoker by pressing the wood on the walls and removing the extra mortar. Give a neat finish to the edges and joints of the smoker too. Finally add one more layer of bricks and check the levels again with the spirit level.
Step 10 – Working Slab
Cement a large paving slab on the top of your brick barbecue smoker so that you get space for working while barbecuing your meat dishes.
