How to Build a Dog Ear Fence How to Build a Dog Ear Fence
A dog ear fence can be a great addition to your home and help enhance the appearance of your landscape. You could hire a professional fence contractor to install the fence for you; however, that is a much more expensive option than doing the work yourself. Installing it is not difficult, and this simple how-to guide will show you everything you need to know.
What You Will Need
Step 1 - Choose Boundaries for Your Fence
First, determine the boundaries for your new dog ear fence. Then, take stakes and string and mark the area where the new dog ear fence will be installed. You may want to attach small flags to the string so that it is easier to see.
Step 2 - Dig Post Holes
Take the post-hole diggers and begin digging post holes for your fence. In order to determine how far apart the holes need to be spaced, measure the sections of dog ear picket fence you will be installing. In most cases, the sections will be 8 feet in length. Therefore, you should space your post holes about 4 feet apart. This will allow you to use three posts for each section of fence.
Step 3 - Install Fence Posts
Insert the pressure treated lumber posts into the holes you dug with your post hole diggers. Then, mix the concrete by following the directions on the bag and fill the holes around the post with gravel and concrete mix. Make sure that the posts are straight up and down by using your level or a plumb bob. Allow the concrete to set and dry before continuing.
Step 4 - Install Fence Sections
Once the concrete that supports the posts has dried, you can start installing the dog ear fence sections. To do this, carefully align the first section of fence on the outer corner of the first post. Then use your nail gun or hammer to attach the section to the first post. Continue nailing the first piece of dog fence to the first three posts. Then, continue adding sections of fencing and nailing the fence to the posts.
Step 5 - Treat the Fence
Use a roller or brush to apply the acrylic wood treatment to the surface area of the dog ear fence. Make sure to apply the treatment to the front and back of the fence. This will help protect your fence from the elements and keep it looking its best for many years. Allow the wood treatment to completely dry before painting.
Step 6 - Paint or Stain the Fence
Finally, use the paint or stain of your choice to finish the dog ear fence. When choosing a paint or stain for the fence, choose a good enamel or oil-based type that will stand up to the elements.
